It can be challenging to do your best in class if you have trouble meeting your basic needs such as safe shelter or nutrition. The Dr. Raj Bala Agrawal CARE Center at UMKC is here to ensure no Roo goes without. Check out the resources below or contact our Basic Needs Coordinator for assistance.

Food Assistance

Food insecurity is the state of being without reliable access to a sufficient quantity of affordable, nutritious food. There are resources at UMKC and in the community to support you if you are experiencing food insecurity.

  • Meal Plan Options – Sodexo, the food services company, offers resident and commuter plans for students, as well as a faculty and staff plan, for on-campus dining at various locations.
  • Kangaroo Pantry – Pick up pantry items in person or order online for pickup during open hours. You may select 20 items a week plus fresh produce .
  • Swipe Out Hunger – Meal plan meals donated to students by other students.
  • Harvesters – Food bank that distributes food and resources through a network of more than 760 partner agencies and programs such as food pantries, kitchens, emergency shelters and day programs. Use the food locator to find a pantry, kitchen or food pickup near you.
  • Meals for Kids – Harvesters provides free, nutritious meals for kids at locations like schools, libraries and other community spaces.
  • Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) – Government-funded program providing benefits to qualified persons to purchase food.

Housing Assistance

Sometimes students need housing, either temporary or permanent. Housing insecurity can range from couch surfing at a friend’s place to living on the streets.

Money plays a critical role in our lives, and not having enough can negatively affect academic performance and health.

Childcare Assistance

For students that are also parents, having access to childcare can prove to be difficult when it comes to academics. Below are links to child care facilities in your area to help you and take care of your little ones.
