Box Basics

Getting Started

All active UMKC Faculty and Staff have Box accounts. If you are a new Faculty or Staff and do not have a Box account, please contact the IS Technology Support Center. Employees with Courtesy appointments and student workers are not eligible for Box accounts.

  1. Open a web browser and navigate to https://umkc.box.com. Click Continue when asked if you are part of the University of Missouri-Kansas City.
  2. If prompted, complete the multi-factor authentication sign-in with your UMKC username@umsystem.edu.
  3. If you previously set up a personal Box account associated with your UMKC email address, you will be prompted to merge that account's data with your UMKC Box account or you can leave the two accounts separate.
    1. To keep the accounts separate, click Cancel. You will need to log into your personal Box account, change the email address associated with it, and return to the UMKC Box account login page in order to start using your UMKC Box account.
    2. To merge your personal Box account, click Invite. You will receive an email with instructions for merging the accounts.
      1. NOTE:  Any data currently in your personal Box account will be migrated to your UMKC Box account. Consider carefully whether you want to do this, as the UMKC Box account is intended for university business.
      2. NOTE:  It is also critical that your personal Box account profile name matches your full name in the UMKC Global Address Book. If you need assistance with this, please contact the IS Technology Support Center.

Additional software tools make it even easier to access your UMKC Box account, whether you are using a desktop, laptop, or mobile device.

  • Box Drive lets you synchronize your UMKC Box account with a folder on your computer.
  • Box Edit lets you edit files in their native desktop application through the Box website.
  • Box for Office lets you directly open and save documents within Microsoft Office applications.
  • Box Mobile makes it easy to access your UMKC Box account on your mobile device.

General Information

FAQs

Please refer to Box's official list of supported operating systems and browsers.

The maximum file size that can be uploaded and stored in your UMKC Box account is 50GB.

A few best practices for uploading large files:

  • Upload one large file at a time. Files more than 2GB in size are considered large.
  • If an error occurs during an upload, it is best to remove the file from Box, if it exists, and start over.
  • It is highly recommended to upload large files using a wired network connection from an  enterprise-class internet connection (i.e. on-campus or home fiber connection).

There are several file types that Box Sync ignores, including .pst files containing Outlook Personal Folders, hidden files, .bak (backup) files, and others. For a complete list of files that are ignored by Box sync, see this article on the Box.com website: Which File Types Are Ignored and Blocked In Box Sync?

Box adheres to the highest industry standards for security and commits extensive resources to the design, implementation, monitoring, and maintenance of its security infrastructure, including:

  • Data encryption (at rest and in transit).
  • Administrative auditing.
  • Password- and time-based sharing.

Learn more about the security feature of Box on the Box security web page.

If you have trouble uploading files to your Box account, try the following:

  • Clear your browser's cache. If you aren't sure how to do that, go to your browser's Help option and search for clear cache.
  • Try uploading one file at a time instead of multiples or whole folders.
  • Make sure you are using a supported operating system and browser.
