Eligibility

How do I confirm whether I am eligible?
As part of the application, you must validate eligibility with the last four digits of your social security number. Unfortunately, international students are not eligible to participate in the federal Affordable Connectivity Program so are not eligible to apply.

About the Device

When I receive my tablet with hotspot do I need to do anything to activiate and use the device?
The device will arrive fully active. Just turn the device on and connect to an internet provider or activate the built-in mobile hotspot to start browsing.

It is important that you connect to the internet at least once in every 30-day period. If you do not use the device, and it "deactivates", you will have to reach out to support (refer to "What If I Need Tech Help" below) to "reactivate" the device. Reactivation is simple, but may need to be performed during regular business hours.

How much storage is on the device?
The device comes preloaded with 3GB of storage, which can be expanded to 32GB with a replacement SIM card.

What operating system is loaded onto the tablet?
The tablet is loaded with Android Version 12.

How much data is available with the hotspot?
The device comes with 5GB of high speed data monthly and it may slow after you exceeds 5GB of high speed data; however you will still be able to use the device. You can always access Wi-Fi when connected to a internet provider.

How to Connect

If I want to use my own device (computer, tablet, etc.) can I use it with Public Wireless?
If you own a computer that accepts SIM cards and would prefer to use your computer instead of the device, you can use the SIM card from the device in your computer.

How do I turn on my hotspot?
Go to the setting icon on your device and turn on the HubSpot and tethering button. Once activated, you will be able to add a password to use the HubSpot which will allow you to connect to a internet provider.

How do I connect to the UMKC Wireless?
Go to settings and select Wi-Fi. From there you can select any Wi-Fi connection you may have access to by entering the password for the connection. When connecting to UMKC Wi-Fi, you will need to enter your user ID and password.

How do I connect to UMKC email?
Connect to UMKC via webmail by visiting https://outlook.office.com/mail/.

Can I download apps on my device?
Yes, apps can be downloaded from the Android Market; however, please ensure apps are from reputable sources.

What if I need tech help?

Warranty

What happens if my tablet is lost or stolen?
Public Wireless can replace your device. You may be asked to pay up to $65 for the replacement, depending on the situation.

What if I break my device or it stops working?
Public Wireless provides a full warranty up to one year.
