UMKC Tutoring provides free tutoring assistance to all UMKC students. We're dedicated to guiding each student through difficult material — from understanding big concepts to developing learning strategies and tools so you can retain information and solve problems on your own.

UMKC Tutoring is a CRLA certified program that offers free one-on-one tutoring to UMKC students for many courses from a variety of subjects. Our peer tutors can help you understand important concepts, figure out the best way for you to study, and more!

Fall 2021 Updates

We are excited to begin holding sessions in-person again for the Fall 2021 semester! Virtual options will be available as well. We are offering a limited number of online drop-in sessions in the evenings, and students will choose if they would like to meet virtually or in-person when scheduling appointments.

UMKC Tutoring Instructions, Information & Resources

Schedule your 30- or 60-minute, one-on-one consultations through UMKC Connect. You must sign up at least 12 hours before the appointment time. While we offer 30-minute appointments, we highly recommend you schedule two back-to-back appointments for a total of 60 minutes.

Once you’ve scheduled your appointment, you will receive a confirmation email. If you’ve scheduled an online appointment, your tutor will also follow up with an Outlook calendar invite, which will include the link to join the tutoring session.

To ensure the quality of our tutoring, all online appointments will be recorded by the tutor.

In-person Drop-ins

Drop by our tutoring space in the Atterbury Student Success Center Monday through Friday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. To see times when tutors are available for specific classes during drop-ins, please visit the Supported Courses page.

When you check-in at the welcome desk, you will be signed into UMKC Connect and asked to wait for the tutor to walk you back to and begin your session.

When you are done working with the tutor, return to the welcome desk to sign out.

Virtual Drop-ins

The drop-in Zoom meeting room is open Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. To see times when tutors are available for specific classes during drop-ins, please visit the Supported Courses page.

When you enter the drop-in Zoom meeting room you will be signed into UMKC Connect. Then you will be moved to a breakout room where you and the tutor will have your own virtual space to work.

When you are done working with the tutor, you will return to the main room to sign out.

Accessing Zoom

Download Zoom on the device you will use for the session. We recommend you download it on any electronic devices you have with cameras and microphone/speaker setups to give you flexibility in how you communicate with the tutor.

Zoom for Virtual Appointments & Drop-ins

At the time of your session, click on the link in the invitation your tutor emailed you for your one-on-one appointment or enter the drop-in session meeting room. Click on the microphone and camera icons in the bottom menu bar so your tutor can hear and see you.

NetTutor is a free service separate from UMKC Tutoring that offers students a variety of modes to get help online (UMKC SSO login required). You can communicate with tutors via chat, audio or audio-video connection. Unlike UMKC Tutoring, NetTutor is not staffed by UMKC students.

Please note: For best performance, use Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox. Pop-ups must be enabled in your browser. To see if your browser will work, you can also run a compatible browser test.

Troubleshooting for NetTutor

If you are having trouble using NetTutor, here are ways to get help:

  • Customer Support Request Link: In the NetTutor system, there is a customer service support link where you are taken to a form to fill out. A customer service representative will respond as soon as possible.
  • Emailing Customer Service: You can also email customer service at
    • Be sure to include your name, UMKC SSO and list University of Missouri-Kansas City as the institution. In your message, please be as specific as possible about the issue you are experiencing.
  • Calling Customer Service: You may also call NetTutor (813-674-0600 extension 204) Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. CST.
