Frequently Asked Questions

Supporting you and your family during the shift to simplified tuition is our top priority. Here are answers to some frequently asked questions.

Is this a tuition increase?

The transition to simplified tuition is not a tuition increase. Simplified tuition merges already existing fees with tuition.

Which programs are affected?

Simplified tuition includes all undergraduate programs.

Which fees are included?

Simplified tuition combines the supplemental and course fees and the information technology fee, which you are already paying, and merges them with tuition. The Student Life fee and optional charges such as housing, bookstore and parking are separate costs. No new fees have been added.

Will this increase the cost of tuition?

Simplified tuition is not expected to create a significant cost difference, but some students may notice an initial, small increase or decrease based on their program.

How will this affect my financial aid?

Students who receive a discount tuition rate, such as the Kansas or Heartland rate, will receive an equivalent discount under simplified tuition. Scholarships will also be honored.

When will I see a change on my bill?

Simplified tuition rates go into effect Fall 2023.

Do I have to request simplified tuition?

Current students will be transitioned automatically to simplified tuition. Your tuition rate will be based on the academic program in which you're enrolled. For those in more than one program, the highest rate will apply.

Accordingly, newly admitted students will be billed based on their enrollment. Courses that fulfill general education requirements will be billed at the lowest rate.

How do I find my academic program rate?

You can search for your program or major by keyword on the academic program rate data table.

How do I know if a course will fulfill a general education requirement or is part of my academic program?

General education courses have an attribute of "UMKC Essentials" or "MOTR" on the Schedule of Classes. Courses without an attribute are included in the academic program rate for your major or program of study.

Which rate will I be charged for my Study Abroad program?

Students who pursue Study Abroad opportunities through UMKC will be charged the academic program rate for their degree program for any coursework that requires a tuition payment as a part of their Study Abroad program.

Why is UMKC making this change?

UMKC is adopting simplified tuition in response to changes in Missouri law. Our goal in following the legislative change is to make tuition simpler and more predictable. Under the current tuition structure, many students face broad variability in their costs from semester to semester due to supplemental and other fees that vary by course. This leads to uncertainty and stress when it comes to budgeting for each term. Under the new model, students’ rates are determined by their academic program and supplemental or course fees are included, making the rate more consistent and predictable from one semester to the next.

Are other schools adopting simplified tuition?

Yes. All four UM System campuses will be implementing simplified tuition for Fall 2023 in response to the same changes in state law.

Who do I reach out to for questions?
