UMKC loves celebrating our transfer students. Transfer students bring incredible value to our campus and we want to ensure they have the resources and support needed to be successful.

Celebrate UMKC Transfer Students

UMKC organizes National Transfer Student Week to celebrate transfer students and the professionals who support them.  From local community colleges to regional partners and our University of Missouri System schools, UMKC is a destination for many transfer students.

Get involved, enjoy free UMKC swag, and learn more about the resources and services dedicated to helping transfer students succeed in our Roo community.

National Transfer Student Week 2023, Full Schedule

Monday, Oct. 16

  • Campaign Kickoff | 11:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. | Student Union, 2nd Floor
    • The Office of Student Involvement invites you to help celebrate current transfer students by visiting our information table for a photo op, snacks, giveaways, and custom #TransferRoo swag!
  • You Are Not Alone - Identifying & Using Your Support System | 12:00 p.m. - 1:00 p.m. | Online
    • The Roo Advising Success Coach offers support to students who are experiencing challenges both in and out of the school setting. The Success Coach serves as an entrusted person with whom students can discuss strategies, tools and resources that will help them be successful in reaching their academic and personal goals.
    • Success Coach sessions are offered in a judgement-free zone and tailored to support a student's needs. Resources and support include connecting students with resources such as tutoring and counseling, helping refine time management skills, providing guidance with conflict resolution, being a listening ear, etc. When juggling school and life responsibilities seems overwhelming, the Success Coach is here to help!

  • Academic Planning with Roo Advising | 1:30 p.m. - 2:30 p.m. | MNLC 452
    • Are you worried about staying on track with your degree? Have you ever wondered, "do I need this course?" If you said yes to either of these questions, this event is for you! In this one-hour workshop, you will learn how to use the UMKC Catalog and the Plan My Degree website to understand your degree requirements and make a plan to graduation. Our goal is that you leave this workshop empowered with the skills to engage in your own degree planning.
  • The Little Desk: Conversations on Entrepreneurship – Design Thinking | 6:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. | The AI Hub, 511 Delaware St. Floor 1
    • The Little Desk, the latest collaboration from UMKC, The Porter House KC, and KCSourceLink, provides insights and lessons learned from the rising stars in Kansas City’s entrepreneurial ecosystem. Three of the most influential entrepreneurial support organizations in Kansas City have teamed up to deliver The Little Desk, a new five-part series focused on entrepreneurship. You are invited to join us each Monday in October as we explore a new topic with the small business owners, creatives, and visionaries shaping today's entrepreneurial landscape in the Kansas City Region. Join us for night three as we discuss how Design Thinking with AI Hub Co-Founders James Spikes & Taylor Burris. Founded in 2020, the AI Hub is a home for creative exploration. With over 3,500 sq/ft, it houses a coworking lounge, four fully equipped studios, and multiple spaces for diverse individuals to connect, develop their skills, and have fun while reaching their goals.
    • Attendance is limited to 50 individuals per session, and registration is required.

    • You understand that internships are important, but how do you go about finding one? This workshop will teach you the best search terms, websites, and timeframes you need to know when you're applying for internships.

    • Are you a transfer student who is interested in developing a transfers student organization at UMKC? Join the Office of Student Involvement for an informational meeting about the future of transfer student organizations and how you can be a part of their success.
  • Transfer Trivia Night | 5:30 p.m. - 7:30 p.m. | Starbucks Lounge
    • Calling all trivia nerds! In celebration of National Transfer Student Week, the OSI invites all transfer students and their friends to an evening of general knowledge fun! Come connect with other transfer students, enjoy snacks, and put your thinking cap on! 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place prizes will be awarded. Participants may play as teams or individually.

Wednesday, Oct. 18

  • Law School Information Session | 12:00 p.m. - 1:00 p.m. | Cherry Hall 115
    • The Political Science and Philosophy Department and Pi Sigma Alpha are partnering with the UMKC School of Law to answer your questions about law school admissions. We will cover everything from LSAT prep to letters of recommendation to personal statements. Open to all majors and levels of interest in law school. Pizza included.
  • Success Coach Drop In | 12:00 p.m. - 2:00 p.m. | Care Center, Student Union 1st Floor
  • Self-Care Recharge Session | 1:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m. | Pierson Auditorium, ASSC
    • Are you making time for self-care? With midterm exams and projects, it's easy to become so busy you don't leave time for self-care. Join the PAL Program for a hands-on workshop that will help you refresh and recharge so that you can finish the semester strong.
      We will be giving away tons of self-care related prizes including aromatherapy, coloring books, bath bombs, skin care masks, and more.
  • Caring About Credit, Financial Wellness | 3:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m. | Student Union 302
    • Interested in getting a credit card? Unsure what it means to build credit? Credit is an essential part of your financial life. It can affect the jobs you get, the places you live, and the loans you are eligible for. Join us to learn what credit is, how scores are calculated, and how to responsibly use a credit card to build your credit history. We are committed to making our events accessible to all students. If you require accommodation, please reach out to financialwellness@umkc.edu one week prior to the event.

    • Connect with other transfer students over pizza (cheese, veggie, and pepperoni), snacks (chips, snack mix), and games in the new Starbucks Lounge!

Interested in conversations across disciplines involving QT researchers or LGTBQIA-related topics? Join us for QT Grad Study Hour, time dedicated to our Graduate Students and their academic pursuits.
      We will offer opt-in accountability sheets and check-ins for those students who would work well when checking in.

Friday, Oct. 20

  • IEEE Lunch & Learn | 12:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m. | Flarsheim Hall 531 (Toyota Room)
    • IEEE is the world’s largest technical professional organization dedicated to advancing technology for the benefit of humanity. Come join us for a lunch and learn event with speakers from IEEE, including the IEEE Region 5 director. Potential topics will be "IEEE Sections Congress 2023 Highlights" and "IEEE Students: Tools and Resources". We will also have some activities involving a Collabratec demo (which will include a Puzzlers challenge), a quick intro to the new Ask IEEE chatbot, and an overview of IEEE.tv and upcoming elections. Finally, we will end with a networking event around 3-4. IEEE gear and food will be provided. Come join us for the next step up in your professional career.

    • We are excited to bring back UMKC Night at Sporting Kansas City! Join us as Sporting KC takes on Minnesota United FC at 8 p.m. on Saturday, October 21. Before the game, stop by the Mazuma plaza to visit with representatives from UMKC. There will be giveaways and more! Discounted tickets are available!
