Roo Welcome unites new and returning students to celebrate UMKC's vibrant campus life, while also energizing them as they transition to the new semester ahead.

Roo Welcome Schedule of Events

Roo Welcome takes place during the first three weeks of the semester. 

Tuesday, January 16

Wednesday, January 17

  • Welcome Table, 11:00 a.m - 1:00 p.m. | Student Union Information Tables (2nd Floor) 
    • New students are encouraged to stop by the Roo Welcome table to get information about campus, ask questions, and pick up UMKC swag. 
  • FAFSA Fest, 12:00 p.m. - 2:00 p.m. | ASSC, 2nd Floor First Gen Den
    • UMKC Financial Wellness is here to help you navigate the financial Aid process at FAFSA Fest!
      Items to Bring: laptop and FSA ID and Password
  • New Student Meetup, 3:30 p.m. - 5:00 p.m. | Student Union Theater Lobby (1st Floor) 
    • Meet and build community with other new students during Roo Welcome! Food and drinks will be provided, along with opportunities to talk with Welcome Leaders about their experience at UMKC.
    • Open to all new and returning students.

  • Student Abroad Information Session, 2:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m. | Online
    • Join us to learn how studying abroad is achievable during your UMKC student career! Meet an advisor, discuss program options, and take your first step to your next adventure as a Roo abroad. For online attendees, the Zoom link is listed on Roo Groups. 
  • UMKC Basketball Night & JD Memorial Tip-Off Tournament Championship 7:30 p.m. - 10:00 p.m. | Swinney Center
    • Join Campus Recreation for the full D1 Basketball experience on the main court in the Swinney Center. The UMKC Celebrity Game will take place at 7:30pm where UMKC Students, Faculty, Staff, and Alumni will battle it out for bragging rights. The JD Memorial Basketball Championship Game taking place at 9pm.

  • Success Coach Drop In, 12:00 p.m. - 2:00 p.m. | ASSC, Information Table Blue
    • Come see your Success Coach to check in and get some tools for your success! FSE engagement experience credit available.
    • Success Coach Drop In Time is different than Academic Advising. Success Coaches can help you with getting motivated, dealing with stress, finding resources, making self care plans, feeling connected to campus, and much more! We are not able to assist with enrollment or financial aid.

  • Student Organization Fair, 11:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. | Student Union 3rd Floor, Student Org Space
    • Open to all students, the student organization fair is a connection point for students and our 300+ student organizations. Students will be able to explore the student organization space in the Student Union and talk with student leaders representing their clubs and organizations. Explore all of our student organizations on Roo Groups

  • Women's Intramural Night, 6:30 p.m. - 8:30 p.m. | Swinney Recreation Center
    • Join UMKC Intramural Sports and the UMKC Women's Center for a fun evening of sports, fun, food, and connecting with your fellow Lady Roos. This event is your chance to learn about all the sports offerings Intramural Sports has to offer and all the services the Women's Center has available.
    • Food Provided (Pizza and drinks)
  • 15th Annual MLK Jr. Lecture Series, Becoming Martin, by Kevin Willmott, 6:00 p.m. | Student Union 401
    • In his youth, Martin Luther King Jr. was described as a determined, yet unfocused young man in search of meaning and vocation. Even his teachers did not see him as the future world leader he would become. What changed in him? And how did he grow to become the influential leader we celebrate today? Join Oscar-winning writer, Kevin Willmott for "Becoming Martin," an exploration of MLK's journey from uncertain beginnings, to a worldwide figure for justice and civil rights.

    • This event is free and open to the public, but registration is required to ensure seating. REGISTER HERE.

    • Learn more about the resources and services provided by UMKC Financial Wellness while painting your very own 'piggy' bank.

    • Welcome (back) to campus, Roos! Join the Office of Student Involvement for a night of fun, games, food, and activities for everyone. Activities include:
      • Trivia by Big 5 Trivia - 9 p.m. - 11 p.m.
      • Karaoke, 6 p.m. - 11 p.m.
      • Barbie movie screening, 6:30 p.m. - 8:30 p.m.
      • DIY Art & Crafts 6 p.m. - 11 p.m.

  • Roo Ready for Research, 10:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. | Miller Nichols Library, Digital Collaboration Studio
    • In lightning talk presentations, students will present their current research, scholarly, and artistic projects.
    • Attendees may register in advance, but walk-ins are welcome. Plan to spend 30-60 minutes to hear a range of short presentations.
