Lab Printing FAQ

The following information is often requested by patrons of UMKC's General Use Student Computer Labs.

General frequently asked questions about the UMKC Labs can be found on the Lab FAQ page.

UMKC students can use up to $42.50 of print quota in IS-managed general student computer labs each semester at no charge. This print quota does not roll-over from semester to semester.

If you use your entire $42.50 of free quota before the semester ends and choose to print additional pages, the cost of the print job is automatically deducted from your OneCard balance (Roo Bucks). This transfer is non-refundable!

Every time you print, you will be prompted to confirm the print job before it goes on to the printers. This will ensure you can see how much each print job is deducting from your free print quota or your Roo Bucks. If you have used your $42.50 of free quota in a given semester, be sure you only confirm print jobs that you wish to pay for out of your Roo Bucks.

The cost of printing 8.5 x 11 black & white pages in the IS-managed general use student computing labs is $.04 for duplex printing and $.05 per single-sided page. The duplex cost only applies to pages that actually have printed matter on both sides. If your document has a page that is blank on one side, it will use the regular amount of $.05 of print quota for that page.

Please check with the site you're using for costs of enhanced printing, such as color pages.

Your $42.50 of free print quota is automatically used in the IS-managed general student computer labs, the UMKC Libraries, the School of Law, the School of Education TLL, and Wide Format jobs in MNL.

When you log on to any computer in an IS-managed general student computer lab, a window will pop-up that tells you how much print quota you have left.

If you have closed or minimized this window and want to restore it, click on the icon at the bottom-right corner of your monitor.

If you have already used your $42.50 of print quota for the semester and choose to print additional pages, your OneCard will automatically transfer funds (Roo Bucks) to cover the cost.  This transfer is non-refundable!

All lab printers default to duplex printing (printing on both sides of each page). If you need to print on one side of each page, leaving the back blank (single-sided printing), you will need to manually select this option for every print job.

  • When printing a single-sided document in the Microsoft Office Suite, there will be an option in the "Settings" section of the "Print" page for selecting "Print One Sided".
  • When printing a single-sided document in a web browser, there should be an option in the "Print" window to adjust either the "Settings" or "Preferences".
    • Find the drop-down menu associated with printing on one or both sides, and choose your preference.

Please remember that the discounted rate of $.04 per side of duplex printing only applies to eligible pages. If your document has a page that is blank on one side, it will use the regular amount of $.05 of print quota for that page.

The Miller Nichols Library provides color printing services. Full information can be found here: http://libguides.library.umkc.edu/printing

Note that color printing is not available in the second floor computer lab of the Miller Nichols Library.

Color printers are also available in the Health Sciences Building, room 3304, computer lab. Color printouts cost $.24 per page and are deducted from your print quota following standard procedures. Please note that printing a grayscale (Black and White) document to a color printer will still count as a color printout and will cost $.24 per page. The color printers in the HSB 3304 computer lab default to duplex printing.

You can see what you've printed by checking your "Print History" within the PaperCut print management software. This can be accessed by clicking on the "Check Your Print Quota" link at the top of this page or by clicking on "Details..." in the pop-up window that tells you how much print quota you have left.

You can also review your print quota usage and transfers from your OneCard by checking your "Transaction History" from this site.

If you aren't satisfied with your printout, you can take it to the Student Assistant and show them what is wrong. After confirming the issue, they will send in an official problem report so that your quota can be refunded for that print job. Note that refunds are only given for technical issues with the printers. Print quota refunds can take up to two business days, so please plan your print use accordingly. No monetary refunds are given, only refunds to your print quota.

If you are having problems in any of the public labs please contact one of the Lab Student Assistants for help.

If student assistants are unavailable in your lab you may also contact the UMKC Technology Support Center for assistance.
