Wireless

Wireless access is provided by UMKC to allow for seamless connectivity for users across our entire campus. Use of the wireless network requires logon using your UMKC Username, and is subject to the terms listed in the UMKC Wireless Policy.

Wireless Configuration

For detailed instructions on how to connect your device to the UMKCWPA network, choose one of the links below.

  1. Click the Ethernet/Wireless icon on the right side of the taskbar.
  2. The Wireless tab will open, click either UMKCWPA or eduroam.
  3. Click the Connect button.
  4. The window will prompt for your UMKC Username and Password.
    • Enter your UMKC Username.
    • Enter your UMKC Password and select OK.
  5. If the Continue connecting prompt appears, select Connect.
  6. Upon a successful login, the connection should appear as Connected, secured.

  1. Click the wireless button in the top right corner of the taskbar and select either UMKCWPA or eduroam.
  2. A window will prompt for your UMKC Username and Password.
    • Enter your UMKC Username.
    • Enter your UMKC Password and select Join.
  3. A checkmark should appear next to the network name. To confirm your connection click on Open Network Preferences...
  4. Verify that the status is Connected.

The following instructions are based on Ubuntu 20.04 LTS. Other Unix based Operating Systems may use the configuration options listed in Step 4, but are not guaranteed to function with our network.

  1. Click on the wireless status bar and select Wi-Fi.
  2. Click Select Network
  3. Choose either UMKCWPA or eduroam
  4. A page should appear to configure the connection. Fill in the fields with the appropriate info.
    • Wi-Fi security: = "WPA & WPA2 Enterprise"
    • Authentication = "Protected EAP PEAP"
    • Anonymous identity = (Leave Blank)
    • CA certificate = "No CA certificate is required"
    • PEAP version = "Automatic"
    • Inner authentication = "MSCHAPv2"
    • Username = (Your UMKC Username)@umsystem.edu
    • Password = (Your UMKC Password)
  5. After selecting Connect, the menu will show you are connected to the network.

  1. Open the Settings app and tap on the Wi-FI menu.
  2. Select either UMKCWPA or eduroam.
  3. Login using your UMKC Username and Password.
  4. Select Trust to accept the CA certificate.
  5. Verify that a checkmark appears next to UMKCWPA or eduroam.

  1. Swipe down from the top of the screen to display the quick settings menu. Then click the Wifi button.
  2. Select the WiFi network you want to connect to (either UMKCWPA or eduroam).  
  3. A page should appear to configure the connection. Fill in the fields with the appropriate info and select Connect.

Some versions of android will only have "(unspecified)" under the CA certificate field. For these devices, the domain field can be left blank.

EAP method = "PEAP"
Phase 2 Authentication = "MSCHAPv2"
CA certificate = "Use system certificates"
Domain = "umkc.edu"
Identity = (Your UMKC Username)
Anonymous identity = (Leave Blank)
Password = (Your UMKC Password)  
Upon a successful login, the connection should appear as Connected.

Configuration of UMKCWPA or eduroam on an Android device requires the "PEAP" EAP method, and "MSCHAPv2" Phase 2 Authentication. Most modern Android based phones have support for these protocols. However, some Android manufacturers do not utilize these protocols and cannot be used on the UMKCWPA or eduroam networks.

  1. Select the menu on the bottom right of the screen and then select WiFi.
  2. As the WiFi network, select UMKCWPA or eduroam
  3. Set the EAP Method to PEAP, set phase 2 auth to MSCHAPv2, and leave certificate as default.
  4. Enter umkc.edu as Domain Suffix Match.
  5. Enter your UMKC username and password. DO NOT use the @umsystem.edu suffix on your username.
  6. Select connect.  You should see an indicator that the wireless is connected in the lower right menu.

SafeConnect

In order to provide a more stable and secure network, UMKC utilizes SafeConnect, a small tool that helps to ensure your computer is up to date and is free of malicious software. This tool must be installed before full network access can be attained in any UMKC Residence Hall. Instructions for installing the SafeConnect client can be found on the Residence Hall page.

Forgetting Wireless Networks

When troubleshooting connection problems it may help to "forget" a saved connection and create a new one. 

Windows 10

  1. At the bottom right in the system tray, click the network icon and choose Network & Internet settings.
  2. Click Manage Wi-Fi settings.
  3. Under "Manage known networks", select the Wi-Fi network to be removed. 
  4. Click Forget. 

Windows 11

  1. Open the Apple menu (top left corner) → Click System Settings.
  2. Click the Wi-Fi tab in the sidebar.
  3. Click Details next to the network you're currently using.
  4. Click Forget This Network... then click Remove to confirm. 

To forget a wireless network that you're currently using: 

  1. Open the Apple menu (top left corner) → Click System Settings. 
  2. Click the Wi-Fi tab in the sidebar. 
  3. Click Details next to the network you're currently using. 
  4. Click Forget This Network... then click Remove to confirm. 

To forget a wireless network that you've joined before but aren't currently using: 

  1. Open the Apple menu (top left corner)  
  2. Click System Settings. 
  3. Click the Wi-Fi tab in the sidebar. 
  4. Scroll down on the right and click Advanced to see the networks known to your Mac. 
  5. Click the more button next to the network, choose Remove From List, then click Remove to confirm. 

  1. Open the Apple menu (top left corner) → Click System Preferences. 
  2. Click Network. 
  3. Click the Wi-Fi tab in the sidebar. 
  4. Click Advanced to see the networks known to your Mac. 
  5. Select the network, then click the remove button (–) beneath the list. Click Remove to confirm. 
  6. Click OK, then click Apply. 

To forget a wireless network that you're currently using: 

  1. Go to SettingsWi-Fi. 
  2. Tap the info button next to the network you're using.  
  3. Tap Forget This Network, then tap Forget to confirm. 

To forget a wireless network that you've joined before but aren't using 

  1. Go to SettingsWi-Fi  
  2. Tap Edit in the corner of the screen to see the networks known to your device. 
  3. Take either of these actions:  
  4. Tap the delete button , then tap Delete 
  5. Tap the info button next to the network, tap Forget This Network, then tap Forget to confirm.  

  1. From the home screen, choose Settings. 
  2. In the settings menu, choose Wi-Fi. 
  3. Press and hold the Wi-Fi network to be removed, and then choose Forget. 

Nintendo Switch 

  1. Go to System Settings  
  2. Select Internet  
  3. Select Internet Settings. 
  4. Select your current network under “Registered Networks." 
  5. Select Delete Settings. 
  6. Select Delete. 

PlayStation 5 

  1. Select Settings   
  2. Select Network 
  3. Select Set Up Internet Connection 
  4. Locate the Wi-Fi network you would like to forget and press the Options button on your controller 
  5. Select Forget in the pop-up window 

Xbox X|S 

  1. Select Settings   
  2. Select the General tab  
  3. Select Network settings. 
  4. Select Forget wireless network 

Finding your MAC Address

During troubleshooting, you may be asked to provide your MAC address.

  1. Click Start > Control Panel > Network and Internet > Network and Sharing Center. 
  2. Click the network you would like to view the MAC address for. 
  3. Click Details. 
  4. The MAC address is listed under the Physical Address heading. 

  1. Select Apple menu (top-left) and click System Settings. 
  2. Click Network. 
  3. Click the desired network and then click Details. 
  4. Click Hardware 
  5. The MAC address is listed below. 

  1. Sign in to your Chromebook. 
  2. Click the time (bottom right). 
  3. Click Network (left). 
  4. Click the network you would like to view the MAC address for. 
  5. The MAC address is listed below. 

  1. Open a terminal or console window. 
  2. Type ifconfig. 
  3. The MAC address is listed as HWaddr in the format of 12:34:56:78:AB. 

Device MAC 

  1. From Home, tap Menu > Settings > About Phone/Device. 
  2. Tap either Status or Hardware Information. 
  3. Scroll down to WiFi MAC address. 

Wireless Connection MAC 

  1. From Home, tap Menu > Settings > Connections.  
  2. Tap the Wi-Fi connection name 
  3. Tap the gear for the current network. 
  4. Tap View More. 
  5. Scroll down to MAC Address 

Note: Field names may vary depending on your phone's manufacturer. 

Device MAC 

  1. Tap Settings > General > About. 
  2. Scroll down to Wi-Fi Address. 

Wireless Connection MAC 

  1. Tap Settings > Wi-Fi > then tap the i next to your wireless network. 
  2. Scroll down to Wi-Fi Address. 

Games and Media

In order to help support a wide array of devices, the UMKC-Media network was created for the purpose of connecting media and gaming devices that do not support modern security methods.

Visitors

UMKCWPA Visitor Access

  • Visitors to the UMKC campus can connect to the wifi network UMKCWPA by using the username UMKC-visitor.
    UMKC Faculty and Staff can obtain the password to the UMKC-visitor account for their Visitors at the link below:

Guest Access

eduroam

  • Eduroam (education roaming) is the secure, world-wide roaming access service developed for the international research and education community. Eduroam allows students, researchers and staff from participating institutions to obtain Internet connectivity across campus and when visiting other participating institutions by simply opening their laptop.
