Missouri Returning Heroes

Are you a Missouri resident returning from active duty after Sept. 11, 2001? You may be eligible for tuition benefits from the Missouri Returning Heroes' Education Act!

Lt. Governor Kinder signed into law on June 24, 2008, the Missouri Returning Heroes’ Education Act, which expands education benefits available to service members and veterans with active duty military service on or after Sept. 11, 2001.

Eligibility Criteria for Missouri Returning Heroes Tuition Credit

You:

  • Are a registered voter, or eligible to register to vote, in the state of Missouri and/or a current Missouri resident
  • Served on or after Sept. 11, 2001 — or in a hazardous duty zone on or after Sept. 11, 2001 (often notated by being awarded the Global War on Terrorism Medal)
  • Were discharged under honorable conditions
  • Are seeking an a UMKC undergraduate or graduate degree (excluding professional programs and degrees)
  • Are maintaining a 2.5 cumulative GPA

Apply for Missouri Returning Heroes Tuition Credit

Provide UMKC Registration and Records with a copy of your DD-214 prior to the beginning of the term you wish to use the benefit.

Provide UMKC Student Veteran Support Services with a copy of your DD-214 showing any award resulting from a Hazardous Duty Zone prior to the beginning of the term you wish to use the benefit. This can also be obtained from an LES statement showing Hazard Duty Pay.
