Depending on what resources you use from off-campus, you may need to “connect” to the UMKC network via a Virtual Private Network (VPN). The most common need for this is accessing network shares, such as the N and Q drives, and specific webpages. Items such as E-mail, Box, Canvas, etc. will all function without the use of a VPN.

globeThere are a few ways to connect from off-campus, which vary based on the type of computer you use to connect.

Windows computers have 3 options to connect to campus:

  • Direct Access. Built into Windows and will automatically connect when you are logged in using a UMKC computer.  No action is needed to use this but if you have any issues connecting to UMKC resources please use one of the below VPN options.
  • Global Protect VPN. Installed by default on UMKC computers but you’ll need to manually connect.  Instructions and more info can be found here: https://www.umkc.edu/is/support/services/vpn/Windows/
  • UMKC G6 VPN. Older versions of VPN that may still be installed on your computer. This will continue to work but Global Protect has many advantages in terms of speed and reliability.

Mac OS only has 1 supported VPN client, Global Protect VPN. This is installed by default on UMKC computers, but there are manual steps you need to follow to connect. Instructions and more info can be found here: https://www.umkc.edu/is/support/services/vpn/mac/.

You can also connect from Apple and Android mobile devices. More information about connecting with these devices can be found here:

Please contact the Technology Support Center if you have any questions. Contact info can be found here: https://www.umkc.edu/is/support/.
