Spanning across the fall and spring semesters, our workshop series consists of four carefully curated sessions in each term, meeting every other week. Each session is strategically designed to provide you with the knowledge, skills, and tools necessary to excel in grant proposal development.

Fall Semester: Laying the Foundation

In the fall, participants will delve into the world of large-scale grants. Through interactive sessions, you will explore proposal ideation techniques, learn how to craft compelling narratives in research, gain insights into understanding the collective impact framework, and unlock strategies for effective team collaboration.

Spring Semester: Hands-On Learning Experiences

The spring sessions will provide you with practical and hands-on learning experiences. You will have the opportunity to develop your scientific illustration skills, master data visualization techniques, and gain valuable insights into implementing successful grant proposals.

Fall Series

  1. Large-scale Grants Overview:

    • Understand the scope and requirements of large-scale grants.
    • Develop initial proposal ideas and strategies.
    • Learn how to collaborate effectively with the Office of Research Development (ORD).
  2. Telling the Research Story:

    • Identify and analyze the target audience for research communication.
    • Craft a compelling narrative using visuals, metaphors, and analogies.
    • Recognize and adhere to ethical considerations in research storytelling.
  3. Collective Impact:

    • Understand the five conditions of collective impact and their importance.
    • Develop skills to build a common agenda and create shared measures.
    • Foster cultural competence and inclusion in collective initiatives.
  4. Teamwork:

    • Grasp essential concepts of team formation, dynamics, and collaboration.
    • Enhance leadership and management skills within research teams.
    • Evaluate collaborative efforts and identify areas for improvement.

Spring Series

  1. Scientific Illustration and Data Visualization:

    • Acquire drawing techniques and familiarity with software tools for visualization.
    • Select appropriate charts or graphs for specific data.
    • Design accessible and inclusive visuals while maintaining accuracy and ethics.
  2. Implementation Science:

    • Understand various theories, models, and frameworks related to implementation.
    • Identify stages of implementation and engage stakeholders effectively.
    • Recognize barriers and facilitators, applying appropriate strategies and ethical practices.
  3. Sustainability:

    • Appreciate the importance of sustainability in research projects.
    • Develop a sustainability plan aligned with project objectives and long-term vision.
    • Implement effective monitoring, evaluation, and adaptation measures for sustainable outcomes.
  4. Proposal Pitch Session:

    • Synthesize learnings from previous sessions into a cohesive proposal.
    • Develop and present a well-crafted pitch aligned with project goals.
    • Receive constructive feedback and refine the proposal as needed.
