Moving onto campus at UMKC? Welcome to your new home away from home!

We know you’ll enjoy your Residential Life experience in one of our four facilities. Move-in is a fun and exciting time – you have the chance to make new friends and create a strong foundation for your academic year. We’ll have staff available around the clock to ensure you get settled into your space and to help you connect to campus through the numerous Welcome Week events offered before the start of classes. While this time is exciting, it can also be a bit stressful if you do not plan ahead. To help you best prepare for your journey to campus, a few helpful pieces of information are listed below.

Before Move-In

Are you wondering what to bring and what to leave at home? Download our list of suggested and prohibited items (PDF). And don’t forget to talk to your roommate, suitemates, or apartment-mates! You may find you were planning on bringing duplicate items and can instead leave those behind.

Required Vaccination

Beginning in the fall of 2015, all college students living on campus at public universities in Missouri will be required to have the meningitis vaccination. The mandate was a provision of Senate Bill 716, signed into law July 10, 2014. Students that fail to provide proof of the vaccine or an acceptable medical or religious waiver will not be allowed to occupy a residential space on campus. We recommend working with your physician or health care provider to discuss next steps.

Vaccination against COVID-19 is not required; however, it is highly encouraged. Students who are not fully vaccinated against COVID-19 must provide a negative COVID test result no older than three days when moving in (see #1 under "Tasks to Complete Before Move-In").

Tasks to Complete Before Move-In

  1. Ensure you’re fully vaccinated against COVID-19 or obtain and submit a negative COVID-19 test
  • If you are receiving the vaccine, you must have received your final dose 2 weeks before your move-in date (for example: no later than August 4th for an August 18th move in date). If you are not yet 2-weeks past your final shot, please obtain a negative test and submit that instead (for example: no sooner than August 15th for an August 18th move in date). Once you are two weeks past the final dose please submit a copy of your vaccination card.
  • See the UMKC coronavirus website for the definition of fully vaccinated and answers to other questions you may have about current campus guidelines.
  • Vaccinations are available to members of the campus community through our partners at Truman Medical Centers/University Health. Register online or call (816)404-CARE (2273) and press option 1.
  • Free COVID-19 rapid antigen tests are available for residential students by making an appointment at Student Health & Wellness. Set your appointment for the same day (or before if you are close to campus) as your move-in appointment.
  • A photo or scan of your test results or vaccination card should be submitted through our RooRez portal. Use the Student Login, then under “Submit Move-in Documentation” select COVID Test Results from the pull-down menu. As a back-up, bring a paper copy to prevent any move-in delays.
  • Once the test has been performed, and until they arrive on campus, Residential Life students should refrain from participating in any activities that put them at risk of contracting the virus.
  • Note: international students arriving from outside the U.S. will have additional testing requirements. Details will be communicated to you by the International Student Affairs Office. You can contact them by emailing or calling (816) 235-1113.
  1. Provide Proof of Immunizations
  • Measles, Mumps, Rubella (MMR) & Meningitis immunizations or waivers should be submitted through our RooRez portal. Use the Student Login, then under “Submit Move-in Documentation” select the appropriate paperwork you are submitting from the pull-down menu. As a back-up, bring a paper copy to prevent any move-in delays.
  1. Set an Appointment to Move-In
  • Residential Life move in begins on Wednesday, August 18th and concludes on Friday, August 20th. You must setup an appointment through RooRez to receive your keys and move-in.
  • If you are unable to move in Wednesday, August 18th - Friday, August 20th, you may check in on Saturday, August 21st or Friday, August 22nd. No appointment is needed – simply head to your building’s front desk. Please note Roo Welcome activities are scheduled to begin prior to the weekend, so we highly recommend moving in no later than Friday, August 20th.
  • If you are a part of the 6 Year Med Program your move in date is Thursday, August 19th between 8 a.m. - 12 p.m. You will still be required to setup an appointment through RooRez and you should be directed to the Thursday, August 19th time frame of 8 a.m. - 12 p.m.
  • Use the Student Login, then under “Book an Appointment” you will be able to select an appointment time. Appointments must be made at least 24 hours ahead of your desired arrival time. Appointments will be contingent upon availability.
  • Appointments will be available from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday, August 18, through Friday, August 20. Each appointment will be 45 minutes long. During this time, you will pull into the designated unloading zone, receive your keys, and move items into your room.
  • One cart will be made available for your usage during your appointment – feel free to bring additional dollies or hand trucks.
  • If you need to reschedule or cancel your appointment you may do so up to 24 hours before your appointment by returning to the RooRez portal and changing your appointment. New appointments will be contingent upon availability.
  1. Fill out your Minor Consent Form
  • If you were 17 when you submitted your housing contract, you have received or will receive an email with information on completing a Minor Consent Form.
  • This form can be submitted to RooRez by clicking “Submit Move in Documentation” and selecting “Minor Consent Form” from the dropdown menu.
  • Please keep in mind this form appears for all students.
  1. Establish a COVID-19 Contingency Plan
  • If a resident, in consultation with medical professionals, needs to isolate or quarantine after arriving on campus, they are expected to do so in a location outside of Residential Life housing. Residents should have a contingency plan of where they can isolate or quarantine.
  • If you do not know anyone in the Kansas City area, please have other options available (Airbnb, hotel, etc).

Additional Move-In Information

  1. Early Arrival Information
  • If you need to arrive to campus between Saturday, July 31st – Tuesday, August 17th you have the option to fill out our Early Arrival Form on RooRez click “Forms” and in the dropdown choose “Early Arrival/Late Stay Requests.”
  • If you are a part of Bio Boot Camp you will move in on Sunday, August 15th from 9 a.m. - 12 p.m. You do not need to schedule an appointment for this program.
  • If you are a part of the First Gen Roo Program you can move in on Sunday, August 15th from 10 a.m. - 1 p.m. You do not need to schedule an appointment for this program.
  • Please note not all early arrival requests are approved. We approve requests based on availability of your assignment for the academic year. We will do our best to meet your request.
  • Those who are approved to arrive early will be charged for the number of nights they arrive early based on room type. The nightly rate ranges from $30.74 - $45.22.
  1. Lofting Kit Requests
  • Lofting Kits are available for Oak Street Hall residents on a first come, first served basis. We have a limited number of lofting kits and in the event we run out, you will be notified via your UMKC email.
  • Johnson Hall residents have the option to raise their beds without a lofting kit being reserved. To move your bed higher, you can check out a rubber mallet at the Johnson Hall front desk and simply raising your bed higher.
  • Please be aware our staff do not assist with lofting beds. If you would like your bed lofted, please have friends and/or family assist with this process.
  • To request a lofting kit, go to RooRez and click “Forms” and select the form you are submitting. The lofting kit is delivered to your front door outside your room.
  1. Single Waitlist
  • We recognize through the assignments process that not every student received their first choice, especially as it relates to single rooms.
  • We now have a single room waitlist available. Priority is based on waitlist submission, not contract date. Keep in mind this is a waitlist and not a guarantee you will receive a single room. This waitlist is based on availability and is maintained throughout the academic year. If you are on the waitlist, you will be contacted via your UMKC email and expected to respond in 48 hours if you would like the single room that is available. If you do not respond in 48 hours, we go to the next resident on the list.
  • If you would like to sign up for the single waitlist, please go to RooRez and click “Forms” and from the dropdown choose “Single Waitlist Request Form.”
  1. Keep Your Safety and the Safety of Others in Mind
  • You are welcome to have friends/family assist you with moving into your room.
  • Please wear a mask if you are not fully vaccinated.
  • Masks are welcomed but not required if:
    • You are fully vaccinated
    • You have an underlying condition that prevents you from wearing a mask
    • You are immunocompromised
    • For more information on the UMKC mask policy, visit
  1. Plan for Alternate Dining if Arriving Before Wednesday, August 18
  • Fall meal plans will begin on Wednesday, August 18. If you are approved for an early arrival prior to Wednesday, August 18th please note UMKC Dining Services will not be available and students will be responsible for their own meals. If you are arriving early as a part of a program (First Gen Roo or Bio Boot Camp) the program will communicate about meals.

Move-In Day

For Fall 2021, the official move-in days for Residential Life will be Wednesday, August 18th - Friday, August 20th for the residence halls (Johnson Hall & Oak Street Hall) and the apartments (Hospital Hill Apartments & Rockhill Apartments).

Moving Your Items

Wondering how your belongings will get from your vehicle to your room? Don’t worry! When you make an appointment, a rolling cart will be available for your use during move-in.

After Move-In

Whether you’re new to campus or returning for your final year, there’s always a lot of information to take in and numerous errands to run before classes begin. Our staff will be on hand to assist in your transition. All students will be asked to attend a wing meeting or town hall meeting to discuss the general expectations of the facility, as well as outline any events that may be occurring during Roo Welcome.

There’s a lot going on once you get to campus. Check out everything happening during Roo Welcome.
